The winner of April ‘Installation of the Month’ centres around Mr & Mrs Lee from Worcestershire who added a stunning Livinroof house extension to their period property.

Mr & Mrs Lee were keen to find a house extension system that would bring an additional layer of luxury and elegance to their already impressive 1830 property.

And, with beautiful gardens and rolling countryside beyond, the extension needed to maximise the couple’s views throughout the year.

As Mrs Lee explains:

“We really wanted to work with a build partner that would respect our property and really understand our design brief. We were clear in our minds that we wanted a Garden Room - a place that we could dine and entertain yet maximising lots of natural daylight. But we also knew that we didn’t want a glass roof.

“That ‘conservatory’ look wasn’t something we particularly wanted so when we discovered Glassier Windows in Worcester and we were shown the Livinroof from Ultraframe we were immediately sold - both on Glassier as an installation company and Livinroof as the perfect roof choice for our needs.”

Howard Nicholls, founder of Glassier Windows, is delighted to have won Installation of the Month for such an impressive house extension project.

Howard explains:

“This installation really is the perfect marriage of spectacular period design using the very latest innovation from Ultraframe. The result is quite beautiful and more than meets the couple’s design brief. It showcases the flexibility of Livinroof and exemplifies its thermal properties. Stunning job - even if I say so myself.”

Glassier Windows has won an Amazon Kindle, a professional photoshoot, a certificate for their showroom/office and the homeowner will be awarded £50 M&S vouchers.

The Challenge

Six and a half years ago, Mr & Mrs Lee moved to a stunning period property on the outskirts of Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire. Dating back to 1830, the former Manor House was divided into three properties, of which Mr & Mrs Lee bought the rear property, affording them a beautiful walled garden and tremendous views of the Worcestershire countryside.

The three-bedroom property became the couple’s pride and joy and, in 2017 they decided to extend.

As Mrs Lee tells us:

“The house is absolutely stunning, and we wanted to ensure that the extension was sympathetic to the original building’s elegant façade. Our initial intention was to build an extension to give us a dining room - again, a feature that would have been a prominent room in the original house.”

Keen to take advantage of the views into the garden and the countryside beyond, Mr & Mrs Lee set out on their quest for the perfect house extension.

The Outcome

Mr & Mrs Lee maximised the space available to them and went as big with their house extension as planning permission would allow.

The result is an extension that takes in views of the garden and – with the anthracite grey Livinroof – is in keeping with the roof on their period property.

The house extension looks modern and delivers maximum thermal performance and an elegant structure, using matching heritage glazing and thermal columns.

So now it’s complete, is the room still a dining room?

“Absolutely not”, explains Mrs lee. “it was during construction that we decided our Garden Room would become the focus of our entire house - using it for occasional meals seems such a waste. It now houses a beautiful log burner and comfy sofas - we basically live in it!”

Replacement Conservatory Roof

Opting for Livinroof, the couple achieved their objective of creating an elegant house extension with a modern twist. The Livinroof the couple chose enabled them to integrate subtle glazing in the roof, which, from the garden can’t be seen but, from the inside, brings in more light and ventilation.

Having enjoyed one winter in their house extension already, the couple have been impressed by the thermal performance of their room.

As Mrs Lee explains:

“The log burner is just for visual interest to be honest. We installed an underfloor heating system which worked a treat in the winter months and, even on the hot days we’ve had this year, we’ve just opened the roof vents and a cool breeze has made our Garden Room perfectly pleasant.”

Now, with the Garden Room complete, would Mr & Mrs Lee recommend Livinroof and Glassier to friends? “We already have!” Mrs Lee explains. “We’ve got friends visiting all the time and it’s such a talking point. The Livinroof does its job perfectly, we were so lucky to come across it at Glassier - we love it, it really is the best room in our house.”
