The transformation to Mr & Mrs Dower’s Cheshire property when they upgraded their conservatory to an Ultraframe Livinroof was “remarkable” explains homeowner Shirley Dower.  The couple moved into the 2 bedroom detached property nine years ago, identifying the existing conservatory as a fantastic bonus. 

Shirley explains:

“We loved the property – perfect location, perfect in every way with a great conservatory that gave us the extra living space, especially when we have friends and family over.”

As the Dowers settled into their home they utilised their conservatory for both dining and relaxing, with occasional sleepover guests.  But despite the fact they used the space a great deal it came with its compromises.

Shirley tells us:

“We used a combination of heaters to try and keep the cold out in the winter and of course in the summer it was the opposite effect, opening the patio doors was like stepping off an aeroplane in a hot country – that said, the space is invaluable and we wouldn’t be without it.”

Some years into the ownership of their home, the Dower’s 20 year old conservatory started to leak and looked a little tired so they decided to research alternative conservatory styles and discovered the Livinroof from Ultraframe.  They were keen to minimise the upheaval and wanted to avoid major building works to their property. 

Shirley explains:

“We want to find an easy solution to overcome the challenges of the conservatory but we were also mindful of the costs – there’s a point in any renovation project where you have to ask yourself; is it cheaper to move house?  We certainly didn’t appreciate that we could simply remove the roof and replace it with something so effective.” 

The couple also wanted to create a cosy space, such that when guests stayed overnight they didn’t feel like they were sleeping in a goldfish bowl. 

Shirley picks up the story of their conservatory transformation:

“We love our conservatory space, it’s a vital part of our home, but we also recognised that the space could feel more integrated – the retailer we chose really opened our minds to the possibilities of creating a truly integrated space by removing some of the exterior wall and creating an open plan dining room. 

Of course the Livinroof is a totally different style to the existing conservatory roof and we were concerned that we would lose a lot of natural light into the back of the kitchen if it was too solid, but of course, the beauty of the roof is that we were able to integrate glass panels close to the exterior wall of the house to flood the back of the kitchen with natural daylight – if anything the rear rooms of our home are even brighter than they were when we had a traditional conservatory roof. 

The space now is truly divine.  I’m proud of it, our guests love it and of course now, it performs like a real room – the perfect complement to our new kitchen.  We’ve managed to turn our two bedroom house into a flexible set-up that can easily accommodate guests. Perfect.”
